Produced in the tradition of 18th Century English brewers who supplied the court of Russia’s Catherine the Great, Old Rasputin seems to develop a cult following wherever it goes. It’s a rich, intense brew with big complex flavors and a warming finish.
The Old Rasputin brand image is a drawing of Rasputin with a phrase in Russian encircling it - A sincere friend is not born instantly.
First released in 1995, the recipe for this magnificent brew came to Founding Partner and original Brewmaster Mark Ruedrich, in a dream. He and his brew team brewed the beer he envisioned and nailed it on the first trial. This cult classic now defines the Russian Imperial Stout style on the Cicerone exam.
It may not be obvious, but the IBU level is 75 - more than most IPAs - but it has such a substantial malt backbone that balance is achieved.
Old Rasputin pairs well with rich desserts, like cheesecake or chocolate cupcakes, and rich cheese like the luxurious Fromager D'Affinois - a double cream, cow's milk cheese that makes a perfect match.
