+Cool, sweet and refreshing melons are the taste of summer. But not all melons are the same. Honeydew and rockmelons (cucumis melo) are classified differently to watermelons (citrullus lanatus) although all have a high water content and are members of the cucurbit family, which includes pumpkin, cucumber and zucchini.
The main difference between watermelons and melons is seeds – watermelon seeds are spread throughout the fruit, while melons have a central seed cavity.
In Australia, melons and watermelons are grown mainly in warmer, northern areas, as they don’t tolerate frost. Rockmelon, honeydew and watermelon are the most common varieties, although hybrids such as galia melons are now available.
